Alfred Defago (1985)

Alfred Defago (* 1942 in Chur , Canton of Graubünden ) is a Swiss journalist , chief civil servant and diplomat .

Life

After attending school in Chur, Defago studied history and German in Bern, Vienna and Rome and obtained his doctorate as a Dr. phil. from. From 1971 to 1986 he worked for Swiss radio as a foreign editor, head of the domestic / economy department and finally as editor-in-chief of the Swiss radio DRS . He was then director of the Federal Office of Culture until 1993 , and from 1993 to 1994 he was Secretary General of the Swiss Foreign Ministry (FDFA) in Bern.

On August 17, 1994, he became a diplomatic career changer, successor to Roger Bär as Consul General in New York City and stayed there until April 12, 1997, when Jacques Reverdin was his successor. He then replaced Carlo Jagmetti as ambassador to the USA on April 13, 1997 and held this office until August 31, 2001. His successor was Christian Blickenstorfer . Defago, who lives in South Florida and has become a US citizen, wrote two books about his experiences in the United States .

From 2001 he taught international relations as a visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and at the Florida Atlantic University .
