Alfred Fowler
Alfred Fowler , CBE (born March 22, 1868 in Wilsden , Yorkshire , † June 24, 1940 in Ealing , Middlesex ) was a British astronomer.
Fowler worked in the field of spectroscopy. He was one of the first to discover that the temperature of sunspots is lower than that of the surrounding regions.
In 1914 he received the gold medal from the Royal Astronomical Society . In 1910 he was elected as a member (" Fellow ") in the Royal Society , which in 1918 awarded him the Royal Medal . In 1920 he was awarded the Henry Draper Medal and in 1934 the Bruce Medal . In 1935 he received the Commander (CBE) of the Order of the British Empire . From 1920 he was a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences in Paris and from 1938 of the National Academy of Sciences . In 1970 the lunar crater Fowler was named after him and Ralph Howard Fowler . In 2007 the asteroid (11765) Alfredfowler was named after him.
