Alfred Haushofer ( March 16, 1872 in Munich - July 4, 1943 in Seebruck am Chiemsee ) was a German landscape painter , draftsman and illustrator .

Life

Alfred Maximilian Joseph Haushofer was a son of the professor for economics and statistics at the Polytechnic University in Munich , Max Haushofer Jr. , and his first wife Adelheid, nee Fraas. Alfred Haushofer's siblings from this marriage were the geographer Karl Haushofer and the painter and women's rights activist Marie Haushofer . In 1902 the father married Marie's friend, the writer Henriette Emma Merk, in his second marriage . The painter Maximilian Haushofer Sen. (1811–1866) was Alfred Haushofer's grandfather, the writer and resistance fighter against National Socialism Albrecht Haushofer was his nephew.

Haushofer attended the Maximiliansgymnasium in Munich from 1882 to 1888 . On April 29, 1891, he entered Gabriel Hackl's nature class at the Munich Art Academy and was enrolled here until at least the summer semester of 1892.

On August 10, 1907, he married Mathilde Luber, the daughter of a Nuremberg glove manufacturer, who brought a son into the marriage. In 1905 the daughter Margarete was born, in 1907 the daughter Marie Elisabeth. In 1907 Alfred Haushofer signed up for Frauenchiemsee and began building his own house in Seebruck am Chiemsee , into which the family moved. During the First World War , Haushofer was drafted as captain of the reserve and earned the Iron Cross II. Class and the Bavarian Military Merit Order .

Alfred Haushofer died at the age of 71 and was buried on the island of Frauenchiemsee.

Alfred Haushofer found his motifs mainly in the landscape at the Chiemsee and in its surroundings and mainly used the techniques of watercolor and tempera painting (gouache). As an illustrator, he provided humorous drawings for the Munich magazines Jugend and Fliegende Blätter ; Original drawings include the guest book of Baroness Julie von Wendelstadt in Schloss Neubeuen and the last two volumes of the Frauenwörth artist chronicle .

He showed his work in the Münchner Kunstverein and from around 1912 in the Munich annual exhibitions in the Glaspalast . In 1920 he was one of the co-founders of the artist group Die Frauenwörther with Hiasl Maier-Erding , Thomas Baumgartner and Constantin Gerhardinger , who later joined Rudolf Sieck , Rudolf W. Groeschl and Albert Stagura (1866–1947). From 1921 he exhibited with the Frauenwörthern in the Torhalle on Frauenchiemsee.
