Alfred Hofkunst (born December 30, 1942 in Vienna ; † July 17, 2004 in Montet-sur- Cudrefin ) was an Austrian - Swiss graphic artist , set designer and painter .

Life

Alfred Hofkunst was born in Vienna in 1942. In 1948 his family moved to Zurich, where he began an apprenticeship as a typesetter in 1958/1959 and from 1959 to 1963 an apprenticeship as a stage painter at the Zurich City Theater . In 1960 court art acquired Austrian citizenship in addition to his Swiss. His marriage to Claire Hofkunst-Guillet in 1963 gave birth to their three children: Rahel, Lukas and Esther. From 1963 he worked for two years as a set designer at the Stadttheater Bern . From 1965 Alfred Hofkunst worked independently and from 1966 exclusively as a draftsman. Every year he presented his works in solo and group exhibitions and received several awards and grants. In 1970 he moved to Montet-sur-Cudrefin (VD). He lived there from 1975 with his later second wife Sabine Hofkunst-Schroer, a trained scientific illustrator. 1981 son Philip is born. In 1977 they moved to Missy VD and from 1981 they had a second home in the south of France. Hofkunst also had a studio in Marseille from 1980 to 1983 and from then on in Missy. His studios also served to cultivate his friendships with artist friends such as Jean Tinguely and Bernhard Luginbühl . Friends and illustrious guests were invited to happenings for the vernissage of his work “Hommage à Marseille” in the Basel train station buffet as well as on other occasions. Alfred Hofkunst died after an illness at the age of 61 in Montet-sur-Cudrefin.

Realistic drawings, the precise representation of details in deceptive views, were court art forms of expression. With fine lines of drawings, sometimes on large-format surfaces, he translated in a humorously ironic way, a different view of the picture content. A full-size image of his studio ceiling and walls as a drawn installation was first exhibited on August 25, 1972 in the Stedelijk van Abbemuseum Eindhoven and was also shown at documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977 . The study of Lake Neuchâtel, in which he recorded 30 large-format color drawings with light reflections from the lake surface over the seasons, was shown in 1980 at the Kunsthaus Aarau. Court art caused a worldwide sensation with the Swatch “vegetable clocks” “Gu (h) rke”, “Verdu (h) ra” and “Bonju (h) r”. The exhibition "Hundred for Jean", first shown in Lausanne in 1988, was also on view in 2002 at the Museum of Art and History in Freiburg. Niki de Saint-Phalle , the Tinguely partner, had given the works to the canton of Friborg. Works by Alfred Hofkunst are represented in many collections and museums in Switzerland and other countries, for example in: Aargauer Kunsthaus , Aarau; Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts , Lausanne; Kunstmuseum Winterthur ; State Gallery of Stuttgart graphic collection ; Stedelijk Museum , Amsterdam.
