Alfred Kröner (geologist)

Alfred Kröner (born September 8, 1939 in Kassel ; † May 22, 2019 ) was a German geologist who dealt in particular with the Precambrian of Africa, as well as with the development of the continental crust and the geology of Central Asia.

Life

Alfred Kröner studied geology at the TU Clausthal , the University of Vienna and the TU Munich with a diploma in 1965. After military service, he went to the University of Cape Town in 1966 , where he received his doctorate in 1968. He then spent half a year in geological exploration in Namibia before returning to the Precambrian Research Unit in Cape Town, which he headed from 1974 to 1976. Since 1977 he has been Professor of Regional and General Geology at the University of Mainz . In 2001/02 he was dean of the geosciences department. He was visiting scholar at Stanford University , the Australian National University in Canberra, the University of Western Australia and the Curtin University of Technology in Perth.

In addition to Africa (South Africa, Namibia, Swaziland, Malawi, Tanzania, Egypt, Sudan), he also did field studies in Sri Lanka, Madagascar, India, Mongolia, China and Cuba, among others. In addition to tectonic work, he used geochemical methods for rock characterization in the reconstruction of plate tectonics in the Precambrian and radioactive age determination on zirconia.

Kröger was co-editor of the journals Precambrian Research and Terra Nova .

Honors

In 2006, Kröner received the Gustav Steinmann Medal . He was a Fellow of the Geological Society of America and was an honorary professor at Northwestern University in Xian, China. In 2006 he received the Order of Merit of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate .
