Alfred Kuhn (born December 29, 1895 in Reichenbach (Vogtland) , † August 10, 1960 in Bad Pyrmont ) was a German chemist ( colloid chemistry ).

Life

During his studies of natural sciences from 1915 in Marburg and Leipzig , Kuhn was drafted into the First World War for military service. After the war he was able to finish his studies. He specialized in physical chemistry and became assistant to the Leipzig university professor Wolfgang Ostwald . There he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD . He then headed Ostwald's and Max Le Blanc's colloid-chemical and physical-chemical internship.

Kuhn switched to industry in 1927: He was employed by the pharmaceutical company Dr. Madaus & Co. in Radebeul , Saxony , a leading manufacturer of biological medicines, head of the chemical department. From 1945 to 1948 he was technical director there and, among other things, set up a system for penicillin production, together with the biologist Robert Thren , who set up the GDR penicillin production there.

Madaus had been expropriated and dismantled, and the two surviving brothers Friedemund and Hans Madaus went west ( Gerhard Madaus had died in 1942) to rebuild their company. Also, Kuhn moved in 1949 to the West, where he worked in Frankfurt his own company Dr. Kuhn & Co. led. At the same time he worked as a branch manager of Madaus in Cologne . From 1955 he was employed as the head of Madaus' literature department, he also worked as an editor .

Act

Kuhn promoted the understanding of the mechanisms of biological remedies at Madaus and thus advanced scientific phytotherapy , but also homeopathy . He dealt with the processing and use of fresh plants, plant and animal drugs. In addition to determining vitamins, he clarified the processes involved in the dissolution of plant constituents and their preservation, and developed mechanisms for evaluating the various active ingredients.

In addition to around 60 patents, Kuhn wrote numerous publications on his findings, and he also co-wrote several works on colloid chemistry and physical chemistry. He was co-author of Madaus' textbook on biological remedies and the homeopathic pharmacopoeia .

Memberships

Kuhn was a member of the Colloid Society , as its secretary he was in 1931.
