Alfred Schumann

Alfred Schumann (born June 16, 1902 in Röbel / Müritz ; † May 10, 1985 ) was a German naval officer , most recently a flotilla admiral of the German Navy .

Life

Schumann joined the German Reichsmarine in 1923 . He sailed on the ship of the line Hessen , was promoted to ensign in 1926 and in 1928 to lieutenant in the sea . From 1929 to 1930 he was a company officer in the III. Naval artillery department deployed in Swinoujscie , where he was promoted to first lieutenant on July 1, 1929 .

From 1931 to 1932 he was an officer on watch on the torpedo boat T 155 . On April 1, 1935, he was promoted to lieutenant captain and took over command of the torpedo boat T 157 , and later of the fleet companion F 6 "Queen Luise" of the 1st escort flotilla. After serving as a company commander in the 1st Artillery Company of the II Marine Artillery Department in Wilhelmshaven in 1937, he served as an artillery officer on the ironclad Admiral Scheer from 1938 to 1943 . After that Schumann was deployed in various staffs. From February to October 1943 he served as the head of the personnel department at the Second Admiral of the Baltic Sea and then until the end of the Second World War as General Advisor and Department Head at the High Command of the Navy . On November 1, 1943 he was promoted to sea captain.

Schumann fell into British captivity , from which he was released on April 16, 1946. He worked from October 1945 to February 1946 as head of department at the German mine clearance service .

When the Federal Navy was founded , Schumann joined it and was head of the naval headquarters from October 1956 to September 1960. From October 1960 to May 1961 he was a sub-department head in the naval command staff (Fü M) III in the Federal Ministry of Defense . On March 17, 1961, he was promoted to Flotilla Admiral. Most recently he was Deputy Inspector of the Navy and Chief of Staff Fü M until his retirement on March 31, 1963.

Schumann was chairman of the Navy Officers Association from 1963 to 1978 . In 1973 he was co-founder and chairman of the German Marine Institute .
