Alfred Thompson Bricher
Alfred Thompson Bricher (born April 10, 1837 in Portsmouth , New Hampshire , † September 30, 1908 in New Dorp , Staten Island , New York ) was an American landscape painter from the Hudson River School and a representative of the late Luminism .
Life
Alfred Thompson Bricher was the son of an Englishman who immigrated to the USA in 1820. From 1851 to 1858 worked as a civil servant in Boston , but studied art at the Lowell Institute. In 1858 he opened his own studio in Newburyport and quit his civil service to work as an artist from then on. A year later he moved the studio back to Boston in the same building in which Martin Johnson Heade worked. He later also worked with Albert Bierstadt , William Morris Hunt , Gabriella Eddy and Benjamin Champney .
After his marriage to Susan A. Wildes, he moved to New York City in 1868 and organized his first public exhibition at the National Academy of Design , of which he was elected Associate Member ( ANA ) in 1879 . A contract with the reproduction company Louis Prang & Co in New York led to a great acquaintance, as his pictures in reproductions as chromolithographs were very successful commercially. He was also active in the American Society of Painters in Water-Colors, his painting In a Tide Harbor (lost), created using this technique, was shown in the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1878 . In 1875 he traveled to Canada on Grand Manan Island . In 1882 Bricher remarried and in 1890 he moved into his own house in New Dorp , Staten Island , New York State , to take regular trips to the New England coast from there .

Bricher's early works emerged from drawings he made during his summer trips to the coasts of Maine and Massachusetts as well as Fundy Bay and painted as paintings in winter. The best-known works by Bricher represent seascapes, which were in the tradition of Fitz Hugh Lane and are assigned to the later luminism of American painting . In particular, he painted scenes at low tide regularly, they were characterized by a high level of perfection in their execution. Overall, however, his oeuvre was characterized by little variety.
