Alfred Wellm (born August 22, 1927 in Neukrug / Elbing ; † December 17, 2001 in Lohmen / Mecklenburg near Güstrow ) was a German writer .

Life

Wellm was the son of a fisherman. From 1941 he attended a teacher training college in Mehlsack . In January 1945 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht , but no longer took part in combat operations for health reasons. After he had spent the final phase of the war in southwest Germany, Wellm returned to his father in Falkensee . He attended a school for new teachers and worked from 1946 to 1962 in different places in the school service, at times as director of a high school and as a district school councilor . Since 1963 he lived as a freelance writer in Groß-Menow near Fürstenberg, later in Lohmen near Güstrow.

Alfred Wellm wrote novels, books for children and young people and screenplays. In the GDR he was valued as a children's book author. He became known for his critical teacher novel Pause for Wanzka or the trip to Descansar (1968) and the autobiographical novel Pugowitza or The Silver Key Watch (1975). The latter contains a haunting description of the flight from East Prussia in 1945.

Alfred Wellm was a member of the German Writers' Association , the German Academy of the Arts (since 1978), the PEN Center of the GDR and, since 1998, the PEN Center Germany . He received u. a. 1959 and 1969 the Fritz Reuter Prize of the Schwerin district, 1969 the Heinrich Mann Prize and 1976 a national prize of the GDR .

Wellm died on December 17, 2001 after a serious illness in Lohmen (Mecklenburg) .
