Alfred Wilhelm Stelzner

Stelzner studied at the Bergakademie Freiberg from 1859 to 1864 . Bernhard von Cotta , Ferdinand Reich and August Breithaupt were among his teachers . His diploma thesis Die Granite von Geyer and Ehrenfriedersdorf as well as the Zinnerzlagerstätze von Geyer was published in 1865 as the first issue of the series Contributions to the geognostic knowledge of the Ore Mountains .

After a traineeship at the Geological Institute in Vienna and an expert position in Norway, he returned to Freiberg in 1866 . Until 1870 he taught at the local mountain school and conducted mineralogical exercises at the mountain academy. As an academy inspector, Stelzner managed the collections of the Bergakademie and its library .

In 1871 he received his doctorate. In the same year he went to the University of Córdoba (Argentina) , where he worked for three years as a professor of mineralogy and geology and explored the geology of the Cordilleras on research trips . In April 1871 he founded the Museo de Mineralogía y Geología in Córdoba , which today bears its name “Dr. A. Stelzner ”carries.

On October 1, 1874, he returned to Freiberg and succeeded Bernhard von Cottas at the chair for geology and deposit theory at the Bergakademie. He held the professorship until his death, and was succeeded by Richard Beck .

In January 1895 he went to Wiesbaden to have a severe kidney disease cured . He died there on February 25th.

Stelzner was the first to describe the minerals Famatinit and Franckeit . The mineral alfredstelznerite was named after him.
