Reinhard Sebastian Zimmermann's younger son was supposed to work in the banking business according to his father's will, but at his insistence, because he had proven to be extraordinarily talented, he took him to the Royal Art Academy in Munich, where he was a student of Alexander Strähuber , Xaver Barth and Wilhelm Lindenschmitt was.

A trip to Paris in 1874 did not bring him closer to modern French painting, but it did bring Rembrandt . After his return he painted genre scenes in the style of the old masters. He had a second passion, opera singing, so that he paused as a painter and only returned to the canvas after years of successful singing. As a result he devoted himself to outdoor painting . A long stay on Capri brought out brilliantly painted pictures. Back in Munich he also made a name for himself as an illustrator for the magazine Jugend .

His friends included the painters Wilhelm Leibl and Wilhelm Trübner . He often spent the summer at Chiemsee, where he acquired a stately property in Gstadt am Chiemsee. Here he still created many landscapes and later also figurative pictures. He drowned on a boat trip on the Chiemsee .
