Reinhard Sebastian Zimmermann
Reinhard Sebastian Zimmermann (born January 9, 1815 in Hagnau on Lake Constance , † November 16, 1893 in Munich ) was a German painter.
Life
Zimmermann completed a commercial apprenticeship and then acted as merchant's assistant in the business of his cousin in Meersburg a. It was in Meersburg that he began to deal with portraiture for the first time . In 1837 he went to Freiburg im Breisgau for professional reasons , where he also deepened his knowledge of painting.
From 1840 to 1842 Zimmermann studied at the Art Academy in Munich , followed by a study visit to Paris and trips to London and Brussels . After his return to Munich in 1847, he took an active part in the bourgeois revolution of 1848 . In 1852 he created the painting "Payment Difficulties" which he then repeated several times in 1853 because of the great popularity. In the meantime Zimmermann's artistic reputation had become so solid that he became a member of the jury at the art and trade exhibition in Munich in 1854. At the General German Art Exhibition in Cologne in 1861 he received a gold medal for his works. A year later he was appointed court painter to the Baden court by Grand Duke Friedrich I. Further study trips to Venice and Paris followed. In 1873 he received a bronze medal at the International Exhibition in the Royal Albert Hall in London. A year later he was sent to Paris and Versailles for six weeks by the Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden . Further study trips to Italy followed later.
In 1878 Zimmermann built a small villa, his summer house, the so-called “Malerhäusle”, on Seestrasse in his birthplace, Hagnau.
In 1884 he was awarded the Knight's Cross First Class of the Order of the Zähringer Lion .
