Alfredo Guzzoni

Alfredo Guzzoni (born April 12, 1877 in Mantua , † April 15, 1965 in Rome ) was Italian general and governor of Eritrea .

Life

Alfredo Guzzoni was born in Mantua on April 12, 1877. He graduated from the Accademia Militare di Modena and then became an infantry officer. After the general staff course at the Scuola di Guerra in Turin, he took part in the Italo-Turkish war . In the First World War he was chief of staff of the 7th and 11th divisions, to eventually become chief of staff of the III. Corps to be appointed.

After the Abyssinian War in 1935, he was governor of Eritrea from May 1936 to April 1937 .

In the run-up to the Italian occupation of Albania , he was appointed commander of the Italian occupation forces in 1939 and ultimately commander in chief of the occupation forces in Albania .

During the Italian attack on France as a result of the French campaign in 1940, he commanded the 4th Italian Army in the French Alps .

On November 29, 1940 he succeeded Ubaldo Soddu as deputy chief of the general staff under the command of Ugo Cavallero .

In June 1943 he commanded the 6th Italian Army during the Allied landing in Sicily ( Operation Husky ). After the armistice of Cassibile in September 1943, he was captured by soldiers of the Italian Social Republic , but was able to avoid execution through the intercession of German officers. The fascist party official Roberto Farinacci had accused him of treason.
