Alfredo Ramos Martínez (born November 3, 1871 in Monterrey ; died November 8, 1946 in Los Angeles ) was a Mexican painter best known for his modern Mexican paintings and murals . He was the founder of the open air painting schools in Mexico.

biography

Ramos, son of shopkeeper Jacobo Ramos and his wife Luisa Martinez de Ramos, studied from 1890 for eight years at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes under Santiago Rebull and Jesús Fructuoso Contreras . His talent was recognized by the American Phoebe Hearst , the first female president of the University of California , who was so enthusiastic about his work that she enabled him to spend three years in Paris . He stayed in Europe for a total of nine years and exhibited his work in Paris at the Salon d'Automne . In 1909 he returned to Mexico, from 1910 he showed his work in Europe at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, where he was temporarily commissioned by the Undersecretary for Education of the SEP to run the school, which he was given full responsibility from 1913. Also in 1913 he founded the Escuela al Aire Libre de Pintura ( Spanish for open-air painting school ) in Santa Anita Zacatlamanco , Iztapalapa . There he exhibited his work from 1926. In 1928 he married Maria de Sodi Romero. A year later their daughter Maria was born, who suffered from bone fluorosis . Hoping for better medical treatment options, the family left their home around 1930 and emigrated to the United States from. Here in Los Angeles, the daughter's health improved and Ramos began making various murals and his painting style was given modern stylistic elements. He painted for numerous well-known people and exhibited his pictures in several galleries and art museums, including the Assistance League Gallery in Hollywood , the Dalzell Hatfield Galleries and the Lilienfeld Gallery in New York City .
