Ari Atholhu Dhekunuburi ( South Ari Atoll , Dhivehi އަރިއަތޮޅު ދެކުނުބުރި), with the short name Thaanaއދ( Alif Dhaal or Alifu Dhaalu ), is an administrative atoll ( district ) in the west of the Maldives . It covers the southern part of the Ari Atoll . The population is just under 8,400 (as of 2006).
The administrative area was created in 1998 during the reign of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom by dividing the Ari Atoll ( Alif ) into a north ( Alif Alif ) and a south part ( Alif Dhaal ) - officially for administrative reasons, as the Ari Atoll is very large , according to the opposition, as an electoral maneuver.
Ten islands are inhabited, in addition to the administrative capital on Mahibadhoo (1780 inhabitants) these are Dhangethi , Dhiddhoo , Dhigurah , Fenfushi , Haggnaameedhoo , Kunburudhoo , Maamingili , Mandhoo and Omadhoo . The district comprises a total of 49 islands.
Due to its relative proximity to Malé Airport (around 70 to 110 km), Alif Dhaal is very well developed for tourism, like the entire Ari Atoll. There are well over a dozen hotel islands , including Dhiffushi ( Holiday Island ) , Mirihi , Nalaguraidhoo ( Sun Island ) , Vakarufalhi and Vilamendhoo . With the Villa Airport Maamigili , the administrative atoll has also had its own regional airport since 2011, previously the seaplane (next to the boat) was the most important means of transport.
In the south, separated by the Ariadhoo Kandu strait , joins the North Nilandhe Atoll ( Faafu ). Neighboring districts in the east are Kaafu and Vaavu .
