Maalhosmadulu Uthuruburi ( Northern Maalhosmadulu , Dhivehi މާޅޮސްމަޑުލު އުތުރުބުރި), with the short name Thaanaރ( Raa ), is an administrative atoll ( district ) of the Maldives . The population is around 14,750 (as of 2006).
The administrative area comprises two natural atolls of the western atoll chain of the Maldives: the eponymous North Maalhosmadulu Atoll with over 80 islands and the tiny Alifushi Atoll ( Powell Islands ) to the north of it, with only two islands (one of them inhabited ).
Directly in the south and only separated by the narrow Moresby Channel (Hani Kandu) connect the Fasdhūtherē Atoll and South Maalhosmadulu Atoll , which belong to the Baa district . Other neighboring districts are Noonu and Shaviyani (both Miladhunmadulu Atoll ) in the east. The distance to the capital Malé is around 170 km.
15 islands are inhabited, in addition to the management services Main place Ungoofaaru these are the island Alifushi ( Alifushi ) Angolhitheemu , Dhuvaafaru , Fainu , Hulhudhuffaaru , Inguraidhoo , Innamaadhoo , Kinolhas , Maakurathu , Maduvvaree , Meedhoo , Rasgetheemu , Rasmaadhoo and Vaadhoo . A total of 82 islands belong to Raa .
The Raa Administrative Atoll was one of the areas where tourism was not allowed until the late 1990s. Due to the remote location has since started slowly with the tourist development, currently single tourist islands are Meedhupparu (opened in 2000), (opened in Reethi Faru Resort August 2017) Furaveri (2016), and Filaidhoo Dhigali (May 2017).
