Alhaji Aliko Dangote (born April 10, 1957 in Kano , Nigeria ) is a Nigerian entrepreneur . The multi-billionaire is considered the richest man in Africa . The Dangote Group is the largest industrial conglomerate in West Africa.

Life

Dangote was born into a wealthy Muslim family in northern Nigeria. He studied economics at al-Azhar University in Cairo and has been importing rice, sugar and cement since 1977 . The rise to billionaire began in 1999/2000 under the second presidency of Olusegun Obasanjo with the construction of a sugar refinery and a cement factory. Since then , Dangote's group has expanded , among other things it is the largest cement manufacturer in Africa, owns production facilities for pasta, sugar, juice, milk, tomato paste, mineral water and salt and has shares in a cellular network and in oil fields . The Dangote Group includes 13 companies that are active in 14 African countries.

Dangote lives in Lagos , which is where his company is based. He was awarded the Order of the Niger by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 and was appointed to the National Economic Council of Nigeria that same year.

In 2014 Dangote donated 150 million naira (US $ 750,000) to fight the Ebola epidemic, according to the Nigerian government .

In 2019, Dangote was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Aliko Dangote is a multi-billionaire and the richest African according to Forbes. In the Forbes list of richest people in the world in 2016 his fortune is estimated at 15.4 billion US dollars. This makes him the 51st richest person in the world according to the list.
