The ship was commissioned from the Fassmer shipyard in Berne on September 12, 2005 . The hull was delivered from Poland. The new building, which cost around 25 million euros, was delivered to its client in November 2007 and commissioned in March 2008 after it was transferred to Senegal. The ferry makes two trips a week between Ziguinchor and Dakar.
The ship's name honors the same name in 1944 deceased leader of the resistance against the French colonial power.

The Aline Sitoe Diatta is set up for coastal navigation up to 50 nautical miles from the coast. In addition to 504 passengers , the ship can carry 18 trailers and six trucks on a 600 m² RoRo deck, which is loaded and unloaded via a stern ramp . The load capacity is around 694 tons.
