Alireza Mohammad Karimimachiani (born March 21, 1994 in Karaj ) is an Iranian wrestler . In 2019 he was runner-up in the free style world champion in the weight class up to 92 kg

Career

Alireza Karimi has been wrestling since 2005. He starts exclusively in free style and has been trained by Mohammed Kermani since then. His club is Shafak Karaj . He is a student and weighs around 90 kg as an adult and is 1.75 meters tall.

His international wrestling career began in 2010 when he won the title at the Asian Junior Championship (Cadets) in Bangkok in the weight class up to 76 kg. He repeated this success in 2011. In the same year he became vice world champion in the weight class up to 76 kg at the Junior World Championships (Cadets) in Szombathely, Hungary. In the final of this championship he lost it against Elchan Assadow from Kazakhstan.

In August 2014 Alireza Karimi became Junior World Champion (Juniors) in the weight class up to 84 kg body weight in Zagreb. In the final he defeated Asamat Dauletbekow from Kazakhstan. In May 2015 he became Asian champion in the weight class up to 86 kg in Doha. In the final, he won over Atsushi Matsumoto from Japan. A month later he was used by the Iranian Wrestling Association at the World Championships in Las Vegas in the same weight class. In Las Vegas he defeated such good wrestlers as Piotr Ianulow from Moldova and Ibragim Aldatow from Ukraine, but lost to Abdulraschid Sadulajew from Russia in the semi-finals . He then secured a bronze medal by defeating Mikhail Ganew from Bulgaria and thus also won the right to start the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

In Rio he won in the weight class up to 86 kg against Mohamed Saadaoui from Tunisia and again Michail Ganew, but lost in the quarter-finals against J'den Cox from the United States. Since this did not reach the final, Alireza Karimi was eliminated and only came in 7th place.

In May 2017 Alireza Karimi became Asian champion in the weight class up to 86 kg in New Delhi and in September 2017 in Klaipeda also military world champion in the same weight class.

In November 2017 he started at the U23 World Championships in Bydgoszcz. After a bye, he met Alichan Schabrailow from Russia in the second round. He led in this fight into the 5th fight minute with 3: 2 points. Then Schabrailow grabbed a leg clamp and turned Alireza Karimi several times until he led with 14: 3 points and thus had won the fight (difference of more than 10 points in his favor). The world wrestling federation UWW accused Alireza Karimi of deliberately losing the fight against Alichan Schabrailow on the instructions of his coach Hamidreza Jamschidi for political reasons so that he would not have to compete against the Israeli wrestler Uri Kalashnikov in the next round. With his "voluntary" defeat against Schabrailow, Alireza Karimi no longer had the opportunity to become U23 world champion, but he could have won the fight for one of the bronze medals via the consolation round (repechage). Uri Kalashnikov then lost to Alichan Schabrailow in the quarterfinals. Since Schabrailow reached the final, Karimi and Kalashnikov were able to continue in the consolation round. Both wrestlers would have met in the consolation round. Alireza Karimi was forbidden by the Iranian Association to wrestle against Kalashnikovs. So Kalashnikov won without a fight and later won one of the bronze medals. Schabrailow was U23 world champion and Alireza Karimi came away empty-handed. On Iranian television he was celebrated for his "heroic" behavior, but basically, the whole action of the Iranians was pointless because of the complicated rules of the UWW wrestling federation.

In January 2018, the UWW World Wrestling Federation banned Alireza Karimi for six months and Hamidreza Jamschidi for 2 years. Rasoul Khadem , President of the Iranian Wrestling Association and Olympic wrestling champion in 1996, resigned from his position (report in the Süddeutsche Zeitung of March 2, 2018).

After the six-month ban, Alireza Karimi was the winner in the weight class up to 97 kg at the Asian Games in Jakarta in August 2018. At the World Championships in Budapest in October 2018, he started in the weight class up to 92 kg body weight. He won there u. a. About the 2012 Olympic champion Sharif Sharifow from Azerbaijan and the Russian champion Batirbek Zakulow, but lost in the semifinals against J'den Cox. With a victory over Dato Marsagishvili from Georgia, he then secured a bronze medal.

In April 2019 Alireza Karimi was again Asian champion in the weight class up to 92 kg in Xi'an (China), where he won the final battle over the Indian Viky. In September 2019 he started in the same weight class at the World Championships in Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan). He won there in the semifinals over Alichan Schabrailow, but lost again in the final against J'den Cox.
