J'den Michael Cox began wrestling as a teenager in the David Hickmann High School wrestling club in Columbia. He later moved to the University of Missouri and has been wrestling for the Missouri Wrestling Foundation, the "Missouri Tigers". He is trained there by Brian Smith. He lives in Columbia, Missouri.
As a "college" wrestler, he was already very successful and was NCAA champion (= US student champion) in the free style in the weight class up to 197 lbs in 2014, 2016 and 2017. (86 kg). In 2016 he won the US Olympic eliminations (trials in the weight class up to 86 kg in free style) ahead of Kyle Douglas Dake and David Morris Taylor . But he still had to fight for the right to start at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He did it with a win in the Olympic qualifying tournament in Ulaan-Baatar. In June 2016, he represented the US colors at the Team World Cup in Los Angeles. He came to victories over Pawan Kumar, India, Alexander Gostijew , Azerbaijan and Alireza Mohammad Karimimachiani from Iran. He lost to Dato Marsagishvili from Georgia. In July 2016, J'den Cox competed in the German Grand Prix in Dortmund in preparation for the Olympic Games. He came there behind Nurmagomedow Gadschiew and Sharif Sharifow , both Azerbaijan, on the 3rd place.
In August 2016, he started for the United States at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in free style in the weight class up to 86 kg. With the exception of the qualifying tournament in Ulaan-Baatar, he had never competed in an international championship before. Nevertheless, he won in Rio over Amarhadschi Mahamedow, Belarus and Alireza Mohammad Karimimachiani , but lost in the semifinals to the experienced Selim Yaşar from Turkey. But with a victory over Reineris Salas Perez from Cuba, he still secured the Olympic bronze medal.
In February 2017, J'den Cox played his second international tournament in Kiev. He came in the weight class up to 92 kg body weight behind the former Olympic champion Sharif Sharifow from Azerbaijan on the 2nd place. At the US World Championship Trials 2017, he secured a starting place at the World Wrestling Championship in Paris in the weight class up to 86 kg. At this world championship he won over Ahmed Dudarow, Germany, Ville Heino, Finland and Zbigniew Baranowski, Poland. In the semifinals he lost to Boris Makojew , a Russian naturalized in Slovakia, on points. But he secured a bronze medal in the World Championships with a points win over the former world champion Michail Ganew from Bulgaria.
In April 2018, J'den Cox was back in the US team at the Team World Cup in Iowa City. He won there in the weight class up to 92 kg over Takashi Ishiguro from Japan, but lost against both Dato Marsagishvili and Aslanbek Alborow . He then qualified at the US World Championship trials in the weight class up to 92 kg in front of Hayden Zillmer and Deron Winn. He presented himself in excellent form at the 2018 World Cup in Budapest. He won there over Dato Marsagishvili, Nicolai Ceban , Moldova, Alireza Karimimachiani and Iwan Jankowski from Belarus and thus became world champion.
In 2019 J'den Cox became the Pan-American champion and in September 2019 in Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan) again world champion in the weight class up to 92 kg body weight. In the final, he defeated the Iranian Alireza Karimimachiani, who ultimately had no chance against him.
In February 2020 J'den Cox started in Havana at the "Cerro-Pelado-International" in the weight class up to 97 kg body weight. He won this tournament ahead of Yonger Pauli Bastida Pomares and Reineris Salas Perez, Cuba and Hayden Nicholas Zillmer, USA. It can be assumed that he will always start in this weight class in 2020 because the weight class up to 92 kg is not Olympic. His main competitor in the United States in the weight class up to 97 kg is none other than Olympic champion Kyle Snyder .
