action

Jesse Armstrong, 10 years old, has a very special wish for Christmas. He wants a husband for his widowed mother Sarah, who since the death of her husband has concentrated exclusively on children, work and the center for the homeless that she founded after the death of her husband, a police officer who was killed on duty, using the pension she was entitled to .

When a competition was held at Toyco Toys, a department store in Jesse's hometown, in which children had to express their greatest wish for Christmas, Jesse also took part. Since he is the only child who has no material desires, he wins the competition. Sarah is now the focus of public interest and has to meet with some of the candidates selected by Toyco Toys, including Roger Nelson, the heir to the department store in question. When he saved the homeless center with a generous donation from being taken over by a greedy landlord, Sarah could not help feeling a romantic feeling for the generous man. When one is already planning an engagement, however, it gradually turns out that Sarah and Roger's view of life is too different, which leads to irreconcilable differences and increasing alienation.

Ultimately, Sarah realizes that she has long known the man who is not only good for her but also for her son. Ben is called the lucky one and has lived across from Sarah for a long time and is a special friend who has always been helpful to her in the past when she needed someone to look after her son, when she had appointments, or just for an evening out needed himself. So Jesse can celebrate Christmas with a "complete" family again.

criticism

For Brian Costello of Common Sense Media , the story told was a “formulaic and predictable romantic Christmas film”. On the positive side, however, one tries to point out the difficulties that single parents face, especially when one parent has died. The film is reminiscent of Sleepless in Seattle , but with a Christmas background.

Andy Webb from The MovieScene also had little interest in the film and said that it was as sentimental as one might expect from a Christmas film, and that it offered no surprises, so it was extremely predictable. The content can be summed up in the following sentence: Widowed mother who works hard does not recognize that the man of her dreams is her neighbor and good friend. Robert Mailhouse is just too noble in his role as neighbor / best friend Ben and Gail O'Grady as widowed mother Sarah is just too nice and her living conditions are not believable. Jimmy 'Jax' Pinchak plays the most unrealistic ten-year-old you've ever seen, so friendly, so beautiful that you end up laughing whenever he acts. All I want for Christmas wants to be an entertaining, romantic Christmas film, but it goes too far and thus becomes “sweet”.

Award

Saige Ryan Campbell was nominated for the Young Artist Award for her role in this film in the category "Best Supporting Actress in a TV Movie, Miniseries or Special" .
