Allen Guttmann

Allen Guttmann (born October 13, 1932 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American sports historian .

Life

Guttmann was born in 1932 as the son of Emile Jacob Gutmann in a non-religious Jewish family in Chicago and grew up in a Catholic working-class neighborhood. Emile Jacob Gutmann was raised by a French-speaking mother and a German-speaking father. In 1942 the family moved to Miami . In the 1950s, Allen Guttmann came to Frankfurt am Main as a soldier in the US Army .

From 1955 to 1972 he was married to Martha Britt Ellis, in 1974 he married Doris Bargen. His first marriage has two children.

He became a professor of English and American studies at Amherst College in Massachusetts . His research focus is the history of sports . His book From ritual to record has been translated into German , Italian and French . His theories on the origin of modern sport, as expressed here, have often been contradicted, as the characteristics of European modernism that Max Weber had transferred to sport were to be found earlier and in other cultures.
