Allen Jones (politician)

Allen Jones (born December 24, 1739 in Edgecombe County , Province of North Carolina , †  November 10, 1798 at Roanoke Rapids , North Carolina ) was an American politician who took part in the Continental Congress as a delegate from North Carolina .

Allen Jones was born in what is now Halifax County . His father Robin Jones was the attorney for Lord Grenville, the Lord Proprietor of North Carolina. After studying at Eton College in England , Jones returned to North America and acquired the Mount Gallant plantation, which he managed as a planter . From 1773 to 1775 he was a member of the North Carolina General Assembly .

After the start of the American Revolution , Jones took part as a delegate in five provincial conventions between 1774 and 1776. In the War of Independence he served in the Continental Army and achieved the rank of Brigadier General . He then returned to politics and became a member of the North Carolina Senate . He sat there from 1777 to 1779, from 1783 to 1784 and in 1787. Between 1778 and 1779 he was President of this Chamber of Parliament. In 1779 and 1780 he was sent to Philadelphia to represent his state at the meetings of the Continental Congress . A staunch federalist , Jones voted in favor of adoption at the Convention that was to ratify the United States Constitution for North Carolina in 1788 . However, the majority, including his brother Willie , who was also a delegate to the Continental Congress, decided against it. Afterwards he did not hold any public offices; he died in November 1798 on his Northampton County estate .

His son-in-law, William Richardson Davie, was Governor of North Carolina from 1798 to 1799 .
