The genus Allomogurnda from New Guinea is home to freshwater goby species from the sleeper goby family . The genus name (Gr. Allo = other , different or foreign ) indicates the connection to the sister genus Mogurnda .
features
Compared to the sister genus Mogurnda , the gobies of this genus have a slimmer body and a wider head. The most important distinguishing feature, however, is an unusual arrangement of the foremost scales on the head in the area between the eyes. These scales face the front with their free edges and not, as is usually the case, backwards. The body is partly covered by round scales , partly by comb scales , and partly without scales on the head.
The first dorsal fin is shorter than the second. The fifth or sixth ray of the first dorsal fin is usually the longest. The pelvic fins are completely separated from each other.
- Fins formula : dorsal 1 VI – VIII, dorsal 2 I / 9–12, anal I / 7–12, ventral I / 5, pectoral 13–17, caudal 13–16.
The largest species of the genus is Allomogurnda papua with a body length of about 12 cm, the smallest Allomogurnda nesolepis reaches about 4 cm.
Occurrence and habitat
The genus occurs in freshwater both in the lowlands and in the highlands of New Guinea up to heights of about 2000 meters. The distribution areas of the eight species are predominantly in the northern part of New Guinea and do not seem to overlap. Three types occur on offshore islands. On Yapen, an island located on the continental shelf, is A. sampricei before the close with the living on the mainland A. nesolepis is related. A. insularis and A. montana occur on the D'Entrecasteaux Islands of volcanic origin, which have never had a connection to the mainland. They may have emerged from ancestors of A. papua , who now lives on the neighboring mainland.
Systematics
Allen split off the genus Allomogurnda , endemic to New Guinea, from the genus Mogurnda in 2003 . Generic typus is that of in 1907 Weber scientifically described type allomogurnda nesolepis . The genus includes eight species.
