Aloe erinacea is a species of aloes in the subfamily of the Affodilla plants (Asphodeloideae). The specific epithet erinacea comes from Latin , means 'hedgehog' and refers to the prickly appearance of the leaf rosettes.

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe erinacea grows stem-forming, simply or usually in groups. The trunk is upright and short or becomes prostrate over time and then reaches a length of up to 60 centimeters. It is covered with perennial dead leaves. The deltoid-lanceolate leaves form dense rosettes . The cloudy deep green to brownish green leaf blade is 8 to 16 inches long and 2 to 4 inches wide. The underside of the leaf is keeled. The keel is covered with a few blackish-brown spines. The stinging, blackish-brown teeth on the leaf margin are 5 to 9 millimeters long and 10 to 15 millimeters apart. The leaf juice is lemon yellow.

Inflorescences and flowers

The simple inflorescence reaches a length of up to 100 centimeters. The dense, cylindrically narrowed grapes are up to 26 centimeters long. The bracts have a length of up to 30 millimeters and are 4.5 millimeters wide. The red flowers turn yellow and stand on 19 millimeter long flower stalks . The flowers are about 28 millimeters long and rounded at their base. They are slightly expanded above the ovary and finally narrowed slightly towards the mouth. Your outer tepals are almost not fused together. The stamens protrude about 4 millimeters, of the stylus up to 7 mm from the flower out.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Aloe erinacea is common on rocky hills in Namibia .

The first description by David Spencer Hardy was published in 1971. A nomenclatory synonym is Aloe melanacantha var. Erinacea (DSHardy) GDRowley (1980) Aloe erinacea is closely related to Aloe melanacantha .

Aloe erinacea is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. classified as endangered.
