Aloe fragilis is a species of aloes in the subfamily of the Affodilla family (Asphodeloideae). The specific epithet fragilis comes from Latin , means 'fragile' and refers to the easily broken rosettes of the species.

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe fragilis grows stemless or short-stemmed, has many heads and forms large groups with prostrate shoots . The deltoid acuminate leaves form rosettes . Their glossy, dark glaucous green leaf blades are 3 to 5 centimeters (rarely up to 10 centimeters) long and 1.5 to 2 centimeters wide. There are many whitish green spots on the leaf surface. The solid white teeth on the narrow, greenish-white leaf margin often converge.

Inflorescences and flowers

The usually simple inflorescence - rarely a branch is formed - is 20 to 60 centimeters long. The loose, cylindrical grapes are 10 to 15 centimeters long and consist of 25 flowers . The lanceolate bracts have a length of about 2 millimeters and are 1 millimeter wide. The flowers have a carmine-red base, turn creamy white towards the mouth and have a green central rib. They stand on 8 to 9 millimeter long flower stalks . The flowers are 20 to 25 millimeters long and narrowed briefly at their base. At the level of the ovary they have a diameter of 4 millimeters. Above that they are very slightly narrowed, then slightly expanded and then narrowed again towards their mouth. Your outer tepals are not fused together over a length of about 5 millimeters. The stamens and the stylus protrude 1 millimeter from the flower.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Aloe fragilis is widespread in northern Madagascar on crystalline basement mountains near the sea coast.

The first description by John Jacob Lavranos and Walter Röösli was published in 1994.

Aloe fragilis is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species .
