Aloe steffanieana is a species of aloes in the subfamily of the Affodilla family (Asphodeloideae). The specific epithet steffanieana honors the horticulturist Steffanie Paulsen, who is responsible for maintaining the Madagascar collection at the Heidelberg Botanical Garden.

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe steffanieana grows in a stem-forming manner. The unbranched shoots reach a length of up to 15 centimeters and are 2 to 3 centimeters thick. The lanceolate leaves form a rosette . The green leaf blade is up to 35 inches long and 3.5 inches wide. The triangular, light yellow teeth on the leaf margin are small.

Inflorescences and flowers

The upright, simple inflorescence reaches a length of up to 80 centimeters. The rather dense, somewhat capricious grapes are 7 centimeters long. The bracts have a length of 10 millimeters and are 7 millimeters wide. The reddish flowers at their base are creamy white and stand on 4 millimeter long flower stalks . They are 35 millimeters long and rounded at their base. At the level of the ovary , the flowers have a diameter of 5 to 10 millimeters. Above this they are slightly narrowed and finally widened towards the mouth. Your outer tepals are not fused together over a length of 15.5 millimeters. The stamens and the style stick out about 10 millimeters from the flower.

Systematics and distribution

Aloe steffanieana is widespread in Madagascar on bare granite rocks near the sea at heights of about 50 to 100 meters.

The first description in the incorrect spelling of Aloe steffaniana by Werner Rauh was published in 2000. A nomenclatory synonym is Aloe versicolor var. Steffanieana (Rauh) J.-B. Castillon & J.-P. Castillon (2010).
