description

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe vanrooyenii grows without a stem or rarely with a very short stem, is solitary or branched and forms small groups. The trunks reach a length of up to 8 centimeters and are covered with dead leaves. The spreading, deltoid-lanceolate leaves form dense rosettes with withered tips. The leaf blade is 12 to 15 inches long and 6 to 8 inches wide. On the glossy pale green upper side of the leaf there are whitish spots that often form transverse bands. The underside is milky green and striped. The piercing, orange-brown teeth on the whitish leaf margin are 3 to 4 millimeters long and 3 to 4 millimeters apart.

Inflorescences and flowers

The upright inflorescence has one or two branches and reaches a length of 50 to 80 centimeters. The lowest branch is branched again. The loose, cylindrical-conical grapes are 25 to 47 centimeters long and 7 to 9 centimeters wide. The linear bracts have a length of 8 to 10 millimeters. The orange or red, cream-colored tipped flowers are on 8 to 10 millimeter long peduncles . The flowers are 33 to 38 millimeters long. At the level of the ovary , the flowers have a diameter of 8 to 10 millimeters. Above this they are narrowed and finally widened to 8 millimeters towards the mouth. Your outer tepals are not fused together over a length of 8 to 15 millimeters. The stamens and the stylus barely protrude from the flower.

Systematics and distribution

Aloe vanrooyenii is widespread in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal in the area around Ladysmith in the thorn bush savannah .

The first description by Gideon Francois Smith and Neil Robert Crouch was published in 2006.
