Alois Epstein

Alois Epstein (born January 1, 1849 in Kamenitz ad Linde , Bohemia , † October 27, 1918 in Prague ) was a Czech pediatrician .

Life

He grew up in a Jewish family and attended high school in Jindřichův Hradec (German Neuhaus ). He then studied at the University of Prague and was awarded a Dr. med. doctorate and from 1880 was a private lecturer in paediatrics .

In 1881 he became a primary physician at the Prague foundling facility and was a substitute at the University Children's Hospital, where he was appointed associate professor in 1884. He was co-editor of the Yearbook for Teething . On October 19, 1888, he was elected a member of the Leopoldina ( matriculation no. 2797 ).

Alois Epstein was the uncle of the Prague pediatrician Berthold Epstein .

meaning

According to Alois Epstein's article published in Berlin in 1894, pseudodiphtheria is referred to as Epstein's disease . He is also the namesake of the Epstein pearls , horn pearls in the middle line of the soft palate in newborns. He also developed the Epstein swing , orthopedic furniture for toddlers, which should not be missing in any nursery and was dubbed "the best invention in paediatrics".
