Alois John

Alois John (born March 30, 1860 in Oberlohma ; † August 2, 1935 in Oed , Czechoslovakia ) was an archivist , folklorist and local writer of the Egerland .

origin

The ancestors of Alois John came to Franconia from the Netherlands in the 14th century , were then settlers from the Braunau monastery in the Braunauer Ländchen in eastern Bohemia and from 1629 as farmers and millers in the Egerland . Alois John was born in 1860 in the farm no. 23 in Oberlohma with the farm name "ban Äd (l) a" (= "near the eagle"), of which a building is still preserved today. His parents lived in Eger after 1875 .

Live and act

Alois John graduated from high schools in Eger and Leitmeritz, followed by studying history and German at the universities of Vienna, Innsbruck and Munich. After 1884 he lived as a writer on local history topics in Eger, in 1897 he founded the monthly Our Egerland - Blätter für Heimatkunde und Heimatpflege , which was edited by the chief editor Anton Krauss (1883-1966), before 1918 professor at the grammar school in Eger, after 1945 as a displaced person in Bavaria.

Our Egerland magazine was founded in 1897 in connection with the Baden language ordinance issued by Austrian Prime Minister Kasimir Felix Badeni and was a success with other publications by John in the German-speaking Egerland.

In 1922 Alois John bought the country house “Waldheim” on Antonienhöhe (Antoninova Vysina) near Franzensbad, today's “Johnvilla”, and became the director of the municipal museum, library and archive of the spa town of Franzensbad in western Bohemia . Among other things, in 1907 he was a co-founder of the study group for local history and home care in Eger; after the establishment of Czechoslovakia since 1922 an association with the name "Unser Egerland eV" and subsequently the Egerländer Gmoi eV

In 1935 he died in the Antonienhöhe district belonging to the municipality of Oed.

recognition

In recognition of his local history research, the Alois John Society was founded in 2002 with cross-border projects.
