Alojz Srebotnjak (born June 27, 1931 in Postojna , Kingdom of Yugoslavia , † December 1, 2010 in Ljubljana ) was a Yugoslav or Slovenian composer and music teacher .

biography

After attending school, he studied composition with Lucijan Marija Škerjanc at the Ljubljana Music Academy and graduated in 1958. This was followed by further study trips to Rome with Boris Porrena , in London with Peter Racine Fricker and in Siena at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana with Vito Frazzi and Angelo Francesco Lavagnino .

In 1970 he was appointed professor of composition at the Ljubljana Music Academy as the successor to Lucijan Marija Škerjanc himself , where he worked until his retirement in 2001.

He was also one of the most renowned composers of contemporary classical music in Slovenia. He was best known for his score for films such as Akcija (1960), Balada o trobenti in oblaku (1961), Stafeta mladosti (1962), A glorious day (1962), Zarota (1964), Don't weep, Peter (1964) , Pastirci (1973), Praznovanje pomladi (1978) and most recently Oda Presernu (2001).

In 1999 he received the Prešeren Prize for his life's work , the highest award for artists in Slovenia.

Srebotnjak was married to the pianist Dubravka Tomšič Srebotnjak and is the father of the director Martin Srebotnjak .
