Alonso Núñez de Haro y Peralta , also Ildefonso Núñez de Haro y Peralta , (born October 31, 1729 in Villagarcía del Llano , Cuenca Province , Spain ; †  May 26, 1800 in Mexico City ) was a Spanish bishop of the Roman Catholic Church and colonial administrator who also served as viceroy of New Spain for a short time .

Origin and church career

Alonso Núñez came from a family of farmers in the province of Cuenca. His uncle Andrés Núñez was auxiliary bishop in Toledo and titular bishop of Maxula ; this took care of the training of Alonso Núñez. Alonso first studied philosophy and theology at the Dominican College of the University of Toledo . He later moved to the University of Bologna , where he obtained his doctorate in 1748.

On his return to Spain he was canon at the cathedrals of Toledo , Cuenca and Segovia . In Toledo he was responsible for the home for foundlings.

Term of office as Archbishop of Mexico

His organizational qualities, but also the power of his sermons, led Núñez to be appointed Archbishop of Mexico in 1772 at a comparatively young age. He succeeded Francisco Antonio de Lorenzana.

Alonso Núñez also founded a home for foundlings in Mexico City and had a reformatory for priests set up in the former seminary of the Jesuit order in Tepozotlán .

Term of office as interim viceroy

After the death of Viceroy Bernardo de Gálvez y Madrid , the Real Audiencia of Mexico initially transferred government power to the governor of New Galicia, Eusebio Sánchez Pareja . The colonial administration in Madrid named Archbishop Núñez as interim viceroy. It was May 1787 before Núñez took over his secular office until the messages and orders had reached Spain and back from Mexico.

He continued the reforms initiated by Colonial Minister José de Gálvez y Gallardo . During his tenure, the great botanical expedition under Martín Sessé y Lacasta was initiated and prepared; Núñez sponsored the establishment of a botanical garden, which should exhibit plants from all parts of the colony.

In August 1787 he handed over his office to the new viceroy Manuel Antonio Flores .

Late years

Núñez remained in the office of archbishop until his death. In 1792 he was in the order of Charles III. recorded. He died in May 1800 after a fifteen month illness.
