Vegetative characteristics

The alpine columbine is a perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 20 to 70 centimeters. The long-stalked and double three-part leaves are largely arranged at the base in a rosette .

Generative characteristics

The bright light blue to bluish purple flowers have a diameter of 6 to 9 centimeters.

The flowering period extends from June to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14.

Occurrence and protection

Aquilegia alpina occurs mainly in the western Alps . The distribution area extends from the Maritime Alps to Vorarlberg . The species is also found in the northern Apennines .

Aquilegia alpina thrives best on moist, chalky soils . It occurs at altitudes from 1200 to 2600 meters. It usually grows in dwarf shrub heaths (especially alpine roses ) and loose green alder stands . It is a character species of the Caricetum ferrugineae from the association Caricion ferrugineae.

Aquilegia alpina is protected in Austria . In Switzerland it is on the red list .
