description

The perennial herbaceous plant reaches heights of about 5 to 15 centimeters. It is hairy bald to lying flat and grows grassy with a single-headed, few-leaved stem. The basal leaves and those of the non-flowering shoots are rounded-egg-shaped, comb-shaped and pinnate, with closely approximated tips; Upper stem leaves (only a few) undivided, linear, with entire margins. Basket solitary, long stalked, 20 to 40 mm in diameter. Bracts green, with a broad blackish-brown skin margin.

Flowering time is from July to August.

The fruits are achenes with a bell-shaped skin crown.

The species chromosome number is 2n = 36, 18 or 54.

Occurrence

The common alpine marguerite grows on moist, lime-poor, moderately acidic snow soils ( snow valleys ), in rock debris in the subalpine to alpine level. It is common in the Silica Alps and rare in the Limestone Alps. In Austria it is absent in Vienna, Burgenland and Lower Austria. It is a character species of the Salicion herbaceae association, but also occurs in associations of the Nardion, Caricion curvulae or Androsacion alpinae associations. Their distribution area includes the Pyrenees and the Alps to the northern Balkan Peninsula.

In the Allgäu Alps, it rises at the Kreuzeck summit in Bavaria up to 2375 m above sea level.

Systematics

There are several subspecies that require further investigation:

  • Western alpine marguerite ( Leucanthemopsis alpina subsp. Alpina ): It occurs in Spain, France, Italy and Switzerland. It has chromosome numbers 2n = 18. 36 or 54.
  • Leucanthemopsis alpina subsp. cuneata (Pau) Heywood : It occurs in Spain in the Sierra de Urbión and has the chromosome number 2n = 54.
  • Eastern alpine marguerite ( Leucanthemopsis alpina subsp. Minima (Vill.) Holub ): It occurs in Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland and Austria.
  • Tatra marguerite ( Leucanthemopsis alpina subsp. Tatrae (Vierh.) Holub ): It occurs in Romania, Slovakia and Poland.
  • Leucanthemopsis alpina subsp. tomentosa (Loisel.) Heywood : It only occurs in Corsica and has the number of chromosomes 2n = 18.

Others

The name Wucherblume is derived from the lush growth of a species that is related to the low -lying meadow marguerite ( Leucanthemum vulgare ). It does not apply to our species.
