Alpha-naphthylthiourea is a poison from the group of thiourea derivatives that is mainly used in rat control ( rodenticide ) .
properties
Alpha-naphthylthiourea is colorless in its pure form and, as a technical product, reddish, odorless and flammable solid. It decomposes before it reaches its boiling point, producing sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides.
use
Alpha-naphthylthiourea is mainly used against brown rats and to some extent also against voles . Since it is tasteless to rats, it can easily be used in bait. It causes fatal pulmonary edema in rats . The LD 50 is 6.4 to 7.4 mg / kg of the rat. An active ingredient concentration of about 1% (10 g / kg bait) was used in the poison bait and a concentration of 30% (300 g / kg) in adhesive dusts. Other rodents ( house mouse , black rat ) are not sensitive. Today it is no longer used because an impurity from production ( 1-naphthylamine ) is carcinogenic. Nowadays, coumarin derivatives are mostly used instead of alpha-naphthylthiourea .
safety instructions
Alpha-naphthylthiourea is suspected of having a carcinogenic effect.
