history

founding

After introducing the first undergraduate degree in economics at New York University in 1902, the newly appointed director of studies, Joseph French Johnson, drove the development of university and student organizations. He received support from four students who, in the winter of 1903, made their first plans to transform their friendship into an organized brotherhood:

  • George L. Bergen
  • Howard M. Jefferson
  • Nathan Lane, Jr.
  • Frederic R. Leach

These four men were called "The Brooklyn Four" because they had to cross the Brooklyn Bridge on their way home from evening classes . On October 5, 1904, they founded Alpha Kappa Psi with six fellow students: Irving L. Camp, Robert S. Douglas, Daniel V. Duff, Morris S. Rachmil, William O. Tremaine, Herbert M. Wright. The founding application was submitted to New York State in the spring of 1905 and accepted on May 20, 1905.

Confession

The Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity's commitment was made by Dr. D. Shaw Duncan. It is said:

Alpha Kappa Psi recognizes that
We live in deeds, not years;
In thought, not breath;
In service, not in figures on the dial.
We count time by heart throbs,
When they beat for God, for man, for duty.
He lives most who thinks most,
Is noblest, acts the best.
Alpha Kappa Psi recognizes that
We live in deeds, not years;
In thoughts, not breaths;
In service, not in numbers on the sheet.
We measure time in heartbeats
When they strike for God, for man, for duty.
The one lives the most, the one who thinks the most
Is the most honorable, do the best.

structure

The total number of members including alumni is around 240,000. This includes 14,447 student members in currently 228 active chapters. These include both US and the following international agencies:

Development of membership conditions

According to the founding constitution of 1904, only men “of Christian faith and Caucasian race” were allowed to join the association. This three-part clause was first softened when it was decided at the annual general meeting in 1950 to open the connection to men of all faiths and races. Following the passage of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, which banned gender discrimination in state-sponsored education programs, the association responded with resistance. At the same time, an internal dispute broke out, as a result of which a chapter was excluded from the connection. After several years of unsuccessful resistance, the board of directors voted on August 7, 1976 to delete the word "man" from the constitution and thus to allow women to be full members.

anthem

The liaison anthem is played to the tune of Auld Lang Syne :

Should old acquaintance be forgot
And Alpha Kappa Psi?
Shall we pass slowly out of view,
Without regret or sigh?
refrain
For Alpha Kappa Psi, my friend,
For Alpha Kappa Psi;
We'll bless the days that we have spent,
In Alpha Kappa Psi.
We'll work with might and main to win
Our mead of daily praise.
And n'er shall we in after years
Forget fraternal days.
refrain
For Alpha Kappa Psi, my friend,
For Alpha Kappa Psi;
We'll bless the days that we have spent,
In Alpha Kappa Psi.
