history
founding
After introducing the first undergraduate degree in economics at New York University in 1902, the newly appointed director of studies, Joseph French Johnson, drove the development of university and student organizations. He received support from four students who, in the winter of 1903, made their first plans to transform their friendship into an organized brotherhood:
- George L. Bergen
- Howard M. Jefferson
- Nathan Lane, Jr.
- Frederic R. Leach
These four men were called "The Brooklyn Four" because they had to cross the Brooklyn Bridge on their way home from evening classes . On October 5, 1904, they founded Alpha Kappa Psi with six fellow students: Irving L. Camp, Robert S. Douglas, Daniel V. Duff, Morris S. Rachmil, William O. Tremaine, Herbert M. Wright. The founding application was submitted to New York State in the spring of 1905 and accepted on May 20, 1905.
coat of arms
Alpha Kappa Psi's official coat of arms was introduced in 1930. It was designed by Emily H. Butterfield , who was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta women's association and had already created several coats of arms for other associations. The main symbols of the coat of arms are:
- Coin pouch
- Four-link chain
- Phoenician galley
- Libra

The promotion of individual professionalism and behavior with integrity is shown, among other things, in the strict rules on alcohol consumption and behavior towards prospective members. These rules prohibit, among other things, drinking games and any serving of alcoholic beverages at events to recruit new members. In addition, all activities that aim at the targeted harassment or humiliation of new member candidates (eng. "Hazing" ) are prohibited .

structure
The total number of members including alumni is around 240,000. This includes 14,447 student members in currently 228 active chapters. These include both US and the following international agencies:
- Canada: University of Western Ontario
- United Kingdom: University of Manchester
- Hong Kong: Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
Development of membership conditions
According to the founding constitution of 1904, only men “of Christian faith and Caucasian race” were allowed to join the association. This three-part clause was first softened when it was decided at the annual general meeting in 1950 to open the connection to men of all faiths and races. Following the passage of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, which banned gender discrimination in state-sponsored education programs, the association responded with resistance. At the same time, an internal dispute broke out, as a result of which a chapter was excluded from the connection. After several years of unsuccessful resistance, the board of directors voted on August 7, 1976 to delete the word "man" from the constitution and thus to allow women to be full members.
