Moritz Alphons Stübel

Moritz Alphons Stübel (born July 26, 1835 in Leipzig , † November 10, 1904 in Dresden ) was a German naturalist and volcanologist.

Life

Moritz Alphons Stübel was born in Leipzig on July 26, 1835, the son of the lawyer and councilor Otto Moritz Stübel and Julie Stübel, née von der Beck. His mother died in 1836 when Stübel was barely a year old. After his father's death in 1849, Stübel and his two sisters Ida and Helene were brought up by their father's brother, City Judge Carl Julius Stübel . After Alphons graduated from high school in 1854, he began studying chemistry and mineralogy at the University of Leipzig in 1855 , which he broke off and continued in Heidelberg from 1859.

Stübel had already studied volcanoes during a stay in Italy in the late 1850s. After completing his studies, which included his doctorate, he stayed in Morocco and Madeira, among others, until the mid-1860s, where he carried out further volcanological studies. With Wilhelm Reiss , whom he met in 1865, Stübel undertook several research trips, including to Greece and South America. In addition to volcanological research, both were also archaeologically active. In 1877 Stübel returned from his research trip and settled in Dresden. In the following years he evaluated the results of his research trips and published numerous works including cultural-historical and ethnological content, such as the ruins of Tiahuanaco in the highlands of ancient Peru in 1892 . In 1878 he became a member of the Leopoldina . He was a corresponding member of the Thuringian-Saxon Association for Geography. In later years, Stübel worked closely with Theodor Wolf , whom he had met in Ecuador. Both dealt with volcanological questions. Stübel died in Dresden in 1904 and was cremated in the Gotha crematorium ; his grave is in the old Annenfriedhof .

Stübel had already transferred collections from his travels in South America to various museums during his lifetime: in addition to the Grassi Museum in Leipzig, the Dresden Museum of Ethnology and the Museum of Ethnology in Berlin were among the new owners. A cone of the Ksudatsch volcano in Kamchatka is named after Stübel .
