Jean Alphonse Favre (born March 31, 1815 in Geneva , † July 11, 1890 in Pregny ) was a Swiss geologist .

Life

Favre's parents were the officer and historian Guillaume Favre and Catherine, b. Bertrand. The father was a book lover and owned the La Grange estate . His brother was the Geneva politician and general staff officer Edmont Favre (1812-1880).

Alphonse Favre studied science and law at the Geneva Academy between 1831 and 1837, and later (1839) chemistry and mineralogy at the Sorbonne in Paris . 1844-1852 Favre taught geology and paleontology at the Geneva Academy . From 1879 he was a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences in Paris. In 1888 he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society .

Create

On the basis of research by Horace-Bénédict de Saussure , Favre examined the geology of the Mont-Blanc area, Mont Salève and the canton of Geneva , whose first geological maps he created.

Favre reconstructed the glacial spread of the Alpine glaciers , created a Carte des phènomènes erratiques et des anciens glaciers des Alpes Suisse in 1884 and advocated the protection of the boulders . He planned a comprehensive work on the Ice Age and its legacy, but it remained unfinished due to illness. Even his successor, Leon Du Pasquier (1864–1897), was unable to complete it.

In the controversy over fossils from different geological layers, he stood in opposition to Joseph Scipion Grad (1806–1873).

Favre was a co-founder of the Swiss Alpine Club and in 1866 its president.
