location

Around 14  km northeast of the Friedburg parish church is the location of the former Friedburg Castle in the Schlossberg hallway . The Burgstall Friedburg is a plateau surrounded by ditches on a hill above the village of Friedburg at an altitude of 585  m to 595  m .

There is an almost flat settlement area around 120 m long and up to 45 m wide. Upstream in the north-easterly direction is a mighty section fortification, consisting of a double wall-ditch system, which encloses an approximately flat area of a bailey (approx. 75 × 20 m). The fortification trenches are up to 8 m wide and 4 m deep, preserved as a visible site monument and sealed off the castle from the hinterland. To the south, west and north below the settlement area of the main castle , a flat area up to 5 m wide runs on the slope, which connects the smaller earthworks (walls) of an upstream fastening ring.

history

In 1007 King Heinrich II gave Mattiggau and Attergau to the diocese of Bamberg . Friedburg Castle was built in 1180 as the administrative seat of the bishops of Bamberg for the Mattig Valley and is officially named "castrum Friedburc" . The castle was the administrative center of the Bamberg property of Höhnhart and was also intended to protect the border. In 1377 the brothers Chunrad II. And Hartneid II. Kuchler bought the castle, which they had held in pledge since 1358. After the male line of Kuchler died out, the heirs sold the castle to Duke Heinrich of Bavaria in 1439 . In 1431 Friedburg was a fiefdom of the Schärfenberger. During the Palatinate War of Succession, the castle suffered severe damage in 1501, but was successfully defended by the castle captain Jörg von Helfenstein. The nursing court belonged to the Counts of Ortenburg from 1548 to 1602 . The castle was owned by Hans Jörger in 1554 and by Countess von Salburg in 1702.

In the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714) Friedburg was attacked and conquered by the Austrian troops under Count von Kuefstein. It burned down halfway. After 1722 Friedburg was rebuilt, but came to the city of Wels . In 1736 the palace, market and district court belonged to the Prince of Burghausen . Friedburg burned down again in 1749, but was rebuilt. The castle chapel was demolished in 1777. The residential building is said to have continued to be inhabited and to have housed the nursing court , but from 1777 building material for buildings in the village was obtained from the decaying castle, so that in 1790 nothing more of the former fortress was to be seen.

Views of the castle

On a picture of the electoral castle Fryburg by M. Wening from 1721, the structure of the castle can be seen as a two-storey building with a gate in the northeast. Bridges lead over the two mighty trenches and a chapel can be seen on the area of the outer bailey.
