Alphonse Juilland

Alphonse G. Juilland (born October 5, 1922 in Bucharest , † June 30, 2000 in Stanford , California, USA) was a Romanian Romance studies and linguist with a French doctorate who worked as a university professor in the United States.

life and work

Juilland grew up in Switzerland, studied in Bucharest , later in Paris and went to Columbia University with André Martinet in 1947 . He received his doctorate in Paris in 1951 under Jean Boutière on L 'argot roumain. Etude générale (in: Cahiers Sextil Pușcariu 1, 1952). He then taught at the University of Washington and the University of Pennsylvania . In 1961 he went to the Department of French and Italian at Stanford University and was its director from 1973 to 1979 and from 1982 to 1984. From 1978 until his retirement in 1989 he was the holder of the William Hartshorn Bonsall Chair, from 1980 a colleague of René Girard , from 1984 a colleague of Michel Serres .

Juilland founded the magazines Cahiers Sextil Puşcariu (Seattle 1952–1953), Stanford French Review (1977 ff.), Stanford Italian Review (1979 ff.) And Stanford Literature Review (1984 ff.), As well as the publishers Anma Libri (Saratoga, California ) and Montparnasse Publications (Stanford).

Juilland was one of Emil Cioran's friends . He was one of the French translators of Mircea Eliades Traité d'histoire des religions (Paris 1949). He translated Karl Vossler's book France's culture and language (1929) into French ( Langue et culture de la France. Histoire du français littéraire des origines à nos jours , Paris 1953).

In 1988 Juilland found Elizabeth Craig (1902–1989) in the United States, the addressee of the dedication of Louis-Ferdinand Céline's novel Voyage au bout de la nuit .

Juilland held several veteran athletics world records and wrote books on athletics.
