André-Georges Haudricourt

André-Georges Haudricourt (born January 17, 1911 in Paris ; † August 20, 1996 there ) was a French geographer , botanist , anthropologist and linguist .

A.-G. Haudricourt spent his childhood in Picardy . He received his Baccalauréat in 1928, a diploma from the Institut national agronomique (National Institute for Agriculture) followed in 1931. He then studied genetics in Paris (1932) and Leningrad (1934-1935). In 1940 he found a job at the Center national de la recherche scientifique and worked in the Department of Botany . In 1945 he moved to the Department of Linguistics. Initially his studies focused on the Romance languages , but soon Asian languages ​​aroused his interest. In 1948 he left France and went to Hanoi , where he worked in the library of the École française d'Extrême-Orient until 1949 .

Haudricourt achieved fame in sinological circles for his article L'origine des tons en vietnamien (The Tonogenesis of the Vietnamese Language) ( Journal asiatique , 1954). The essay inspired later researchers to believe that Classical Chinese was not a tonal language .
