Charles-André Julien (born September 2, 1891 in Caen ; died July 19, 1991 in Paris ) was a French historian, journalist, orientalist and university professor. He was particularly interested in the Maghreb (North Africa) and the French colonial empire . His best-known work is Histoire de l'Afrique du Nord: Des origines à 1830 ( History of North Africa: from the origins to 1830 ). The series Colonies et empires: Collection internationale de documentation coloniale (later under the title Pays d'outre-mer: Colonies, empires, pays autonomes, Collection internationale de documentation publiée sous la direction ) was published under his direction.

Charles-André Julien was born in Caen, northern France, the son of French Huguenots , and at the age of fifteen he emigrated with his family to Algeria (then under French occupation), where he became interested in the history of the region. Julien's history of North Africa served as the standard work on this subject for decades. His political commitment and his expertise in North Africa contributed to his place in the Haut Comité méditerranéen et de l'Afrique du Nord of the Popular Front from 1936 to 1939 and the election to the Council of the French Union from 1946–1958.

Charles-André Julien wrote various works on the history of Africa, especially North Africa, which are in well-known French series such as the Bibliothèque historique (Payot) and Que sais-je? published.

He taught at the Mohammed V University in Rabat (Morocco) and at the Sorbonne in Paris . He was also a regular columnist for the French daily Le Monde .

The book Les techniciens de la colonization (XIXe-XXe siècles) published by him, provided with his foreword and an introduction - which forms the first volume of the Colonies et empires series (later Pays d'outre-mer ) - is a collection of short biographies the most important representatives of the largest colonial powers.

The anti-colonial writings of Charles-André Julien were combined in an anthology by Magali Morsy.

"There are two things in the world that one cannot get rid of, that is Islam and tobacco!"
