Maurice Leenhardt

Maurice Leenhardt (* 1878 in Montauban , † 1954 in Paris ) was a French Protestant pastor and ethnologist who dealt with proselytizing and researching the Kanaks in New Caledonia .

Mission in New Caledonia

Maurice Leenardt's family came originally from Alsace and settled in southern France in the 18th century. Leenardt's father was a professor of theology at the University of Montauban; the son made an early decision to become a missionary overseas.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Protestant authorities competed with the (Catholic) Marists to evangelize the Kanaks . Maurice Leenhardt was appointed pastor in New Caledonia in 1902 , where he founded the "Dö nèvâ" mission in the Houaïlou Valley . Beyond the role of pastor, he dedicated himself to understanding the mentality of these people on the path to extinction.

When he arrived in New Caledonia, Maurice Leenhardt was greeted by the Mayor of Nouméa with the words: Que venez-vous faire ici? Dans dix ans il n'y aura plus de Kanaks ("What do you want here? In ten years there will be no more Kanaks"). He dedicated himself to the fight against this creeping genocide ; he fought alcoholism , which was slowly wreaking havoc on the Kanak people. He translated the New Testament into the language of Houaïlou with the help of his first students .

He returned to France in 1927, where he founded the Société des Océanistes and the Musée de l'Homme and took over the chair of Lucien Lévy-Bruhl at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales . After a second stay of almost ten years in New Caledonia, he began teaching oceanic languages in 1944 at the Institut national des langues et civilizations orientales .

Contributions to ethnology

Maurice Leenhardt's contributions to ethnology are significant, although he has not given them a theoretical framework.

Before Bronisław Malinowski he practiced the ethnology propagated by Marcel Mauss from his office in Paris. For twenty-five years he practiced observation participante and active research, the high value of which was only rediscovered in the 1960s.

Maurice Leenhardt was not a dogmatist and in none of his contributions did he endeavor to "make school".

Nevertheless, he was one of the first to look at social phenomena in their entirety and to research the art, myths, habits and language of the Kanaks.
