Alphonse Pyrame de Candolle
Alphonse Louis Pierre Pyrame de Candolle (born October 28, 1806 in Paris , † April 4, 1893 in Geneva ) was a Swiss botanist and sociologist of science . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " A.DC. "
Live and act
The son of Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle originally studied law at the University of Geneva , where he became honorary professor of botany in 1831 and took over his father's chair in 1835. He continued his work Prodromus systematis naturalis regni vegetabilis as editor. Together with his son Casimir Pyramus de Candolle , he published several botanical works. He was a member of the editorial team of the botanical journal Flore des serres et des jardins de l'Europe published by Louis van Houtte . After his father's death in 1841, he became director of the Geneva Botanical Gardens .
The botanist Robert Buser was the curator of the Herbarium de Candolle between 1884 and 1924 .
Unusual for a botanist was his preoccupation with the field of the sociology of science. In his book Histoire des sciences et des savants depuis deux siècles , de Candolle analyzed the conditions that lead to the development of outstanding scientists. Among other things, he examined the influence of heredity, social status, political environment and religion.
Honors
In 1889 he was awarded the Linnean Medal of the Linnean Society of London . In 1851 he became a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences in Paris; since 1874 he was associé étranger of the academy. On August 17, 1891, he was accepted as a foreign member of the Prussian order Pour le Mérite for science and the arts . In 1874 he became a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences and in 1859 a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1836 he was elected to the Leopoldina , 1847 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , 1858 to the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg , 1869 as a foreign member of the Royal Society of London , 1877 as an honorary member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and in 1883 the National Academy of Sciences .
After him the genus Alphonsea Hook.f. & Thomson and Alphonseopsis Baker f. from the Annonaceae family.
