Alpine Hosts , based in Innsbruck , is an association that supports small-scale tourism in the Alpine region .

The organization supports its members through quality and marketing measures and is an umbrella brand under which private rooms and accommodation in commercial accommodation establishments are offered in a family atmosphere in the holiday regions of Allgäu , Upper Bavaria , Salzburg and Tyrol .

At the height of its activity, the cooperation comprised around 450 members (August 2010).

Historical development

The cross-border initiative was founded in 2005 by the Munich-Upper Bavaria Tourist Association , SalzburgerLand Tourismus and Tirol Werbung to support small-scale tourism in the Alpine region.

initial situation

The idea of this tourist cooperation arose due to the constant decline in overnight stays in the segment of small and medium-sized businesses in the hospitality industry in the Bavarian-Austrian Alpine region. The tourism industry is one of the most important economic factors here. Small-scale tourism plays a particularly important role: 30 to 40% of all overnight stays are in private rooms, holiday apartments and smaller guest houses and pensions.

A greater willingness to invest and innovate, dealing with the target group issue and promoting eTourism among small and medium-sized businesses should counteract this process.

Interreg IIIA project "Alpine Hospitality Quality Offensive" (2005–2008)

In order to intensify cross-border tourism cooperation between the regions of Upper Bavaria, Salzburg and Tyrol and to break down barriers, the three regional tourism associations started the EU-funded INTERREG IIIA project Austria-Germany / Bavaria “Alpine Hospitality Quality Offensive”. The program serves to “promote cross-border cooperation in the Bavarian-Austrian border region”.

The focus of the project was on offering basic and advanced seminars on topics such as service, guest care, costing or the legal fundamentals of the hospitality industry ("Landlord Academy"). In addition, measures for quality assurance and quality control of the member companies were established.

Other focal points were the development of a supra-regional network for the mutual exchange of experience and information between the companies, as well as the development of the Alpine host brand . This stands for small, family businesses in the Alpine region with tested quality, the use of regional products and personal, individual service.

In the final report to the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labor, the association writes about the achievement of the project goals: "In connection with this quality offensive, a cross-border strategy for 'quality marketing' was developed and implemented for the first time, which is primarily open to weaker providers ...". Further goals achieved: "Increasing the quality of tourism service providers through customer and service orientation, professionalization and specialization [...] season extension, overnight stays and increased added value". According to the report, the seminars of the Landlord's Academy were particularly successful, in which a total of 2,479 members took part within the project period and which were rated above average by the participants.

Interreg IV project "Innovation network for alpine offer development" (2008-2011)

In 2008 the INTERREG IV project "Innovation network for development of alpine offers" was connected to the Interreg III project.

In the course of the follow-up project, the area of cooperation between the tourist regions of Upper Bavaria, Salzburg and Tyrol was further expanded and extended to the Allgäu. In 2008, the Allgäu-Bayerisch-Schwaben eV tourism association joined as a further project partner.

The focus of the Interreg IV project is the goal of supporting small accommodation providers by specializing in topics and target groups to better meet guest requirements, to develop innovative activities and to build up new and qualitatively improved services and products from them.

Agendas

The association sees itself as a "quality and marketing offensive".

The members are landlords of private rooms and holiday apartments as well as commercial enterprises up to a size of 40 beds from the participating regions, and the middle segment of gastronomy (2 edelweiss for private room and holiday apartment renters, a maximum of 4 stars for hotels in Austria, a maximum of 4 stars in the Hotel and G classification or classification in the classification of the German Tourism Association / 2–5 stars).

Criteria such as a familiar atmosphere, alpine character, regional offerings and presence on the Internet (own e-mail address and website) are also offered.

Concept of the umbrella brand

Four main offerings have been developed for the members of the association, in which the individual companies can specialize:

  • Athletes welcome: for active holidays in the mountains (hiking, mountain biking, climbing, skiing ...)
  • Explorers welcome: for holidays with a strong regional focus (getting to know the culture and cuisine of the region)
  • Health vacationers welcome: for health-oriented vacation
  • Children welcome: for holidays with children

continuing Professional Education

The most important element of quality assurance is the landlord academy, a training program for the members of the association. The association sees itself as helping people to help themselves .

financing

In addition to membership fees, the project was funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) , the Federal Ministry for Economy, Family and Youth , the states of Salzburg and Tyrol and the Bavarian State Ministry for Economy, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology .

From 2012 to 2016, the association was financed by membership fees and income from the implementation / processing of the landlords' academy.

The association has been in dissolution since the beginning of 2017. The Landlord's Academy in Tyrol is being continued by the Association of Tyrolean Tourism Associations or by the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences under the name of the Salzburg Future Academy.
