content

Winter rests on work on a dam construction site in the Italian Alps . Only two men live as guards in the abandoned barracks . When one of the two is replaced according to schedule, instead of the well-known but prevented substitute, a young and very inexperienced volunteer comes, a working student who expects time to prepare for his exams from the loneliness in the high mountains. The disappointment of the old man is initially expressed in a cool distance towards the “foreign” in every respect. But when the young man, who was frolicking around in the sun and snow like an exuberant child, collapsed during a stormy night with a slight attack of fever, the old dam guard's fatherly feelings prevail. He devotedly cares for the terrified. And when the two of them have to seek refuge in the stone chapel due to the approaching storm and only donate the candles on the altar due to the lack of other lighting, it becomes obvious that this for one another has more than just humanitarian roots. The next morning the storm and fever subsided. With visible joy, both feel the new bond. There is no longer any question of the wish expressed in the darkness of fear to want to return to the valley as quickly as possible.

Reviews

The Protestant Film Observer summarizes his criticism as follows: “The great debut Ermanno Olmis is an exhilarating experience for everyone who loves convincing simplicity. Absolutely worth seeing (from around 12). ”The lexicon of the international film is also impressed:“ Shiny photographed and almost documentary designed, characterized by an impressive humanity, the film describes the difficult rapprochement between two completely different people. The first work by Ermanno Olmis celebrates the poetry of the mountains and feels this magic in everyday things too. "
