Alt St. Cornelius was the Roman Catholic parish church of Cologne-Rath / Heumar in North Rhine-Westphalia . Today only the Romanesque church tower bears witness to it .

history

The tower of the old parish church, consecrated to St. Cornelius of Rome , probably dates from a chapel mentioned in a document in 1147 in connection with the Deutz Abbey . It was a branch of the church in Urbach until the establishment of its own Heumarer parish in 1698. The nave was declared dilapidated in 1824 and laid down after 1826, and in 1834 Neu St. Cornelius zu Rath / Heumar was built .

At the end of the 19th century, the art historian Paul Clemen was able to examine the tuff stone masonry of the tower, which was built on a square floor plan with a side length of 4.70 meters, in its original form. On the east side, which was still open, he found the limestone strips from two earlier roof approaches. One was the width of the tower, a later one belonged to a larger building protruding to the north. In 1927 an apse was added to the east side of the tower so that the ground floor room could be used as a chapel and memorial. This construction measure was reversed in 1968 when the tower was renovated. The apse was laid down, the east wall closed and the entire tuff masonry of the tower was renewed. As a result, all of the remaining traces of the roof approaches and the references to the original nave have been lost.
