Old Church (Welling)
The old church in Welling , a local community in the district of Mayen-Koblenz in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in the middle of the 13th century. It has been a protected architectural monument since 1983 .
history
The church is a Romanesque building with a square west tower . The nave was equipped with two central pillars and probably had a flat wooden ceiling. Today only the west tower, possibly built before the 13th century, and the Gothic choir remain . In 1881 the nave was demolished after the parish church was rebuilt. The choir has been used as a war memorial chapel since 1943 .

In the middle of the 15th century the choir was rebuilt in Gothic style. The late Gothic vaults rest on slender corner columns with figurative and vegetable capitals . The keystones show the coats of arms of the builders, Archbishop Jakob I von Sierck and Count Ruprecht von Virneburg . On the north side of the choir there are remains of a wall painting depicting a mass of St. Gregor. The cafeteria of the altar with the remains of the Baroque altarpiece dates from the 15th century. In 1943 the altar received an essay depicting the four riders of the apocalyptic . On the left side there is the sacrament niche and the baptismal font from the 17th century.
