The old and new Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in the Brilon village of Hoppecke is a church complex made up of two different old buildings. The Roman Catholic parish church belongs to the Archdiocese of Paderborn . The patronage is for the Visitation of the Virgin Mary . The old church is one of the oldest in the present-day urban area of Brilon.

Old church

Like the church in neighboring Thülen, the building is one of the two oldest structures in the city of Brilon. It was built about seventy years before the city was founded. The community was a border parish that separated the Cologne Brilon from the diocese of Paderborn. The parish was independent until 1560 with its own pleban, or Rector Ecclesiae.

The old church was built between 1140 and 1170. Two yokes of the single-nave church have been preserved. In the church, the remains of the Lippoldsberg consoles with Romanesque flat ornaments, which are not found anywhere else in the Sauerland, are particularly noteworthy. According to the inscription in a door, the building was renovated in 1702.

The altarpiece depicts the visitation of Mary from the Gospel according to Luke . Joachim and Anna are shown on the small upper altarpiece . On the left you can see Joseph with Jesus in his arms, on the right John with the Gospel book and eagle, as well as a pen.

Crescent Madonna

On the right on the wall next to the choir is a baroque Madonna with a rosary, scepter and crescent moon under her feet. The figure is about as old as the high altar. The baby Jesus was added during a restoration.

Church window

The following scenes are shown on the church windows:

Bells

Before the Second World War , four bronze bells hung in the tower of the new church, which were confiscated for armament purposes. Four steel bells were supplied as replacements. In 1946, the Junker bell foundry in Brilon cast four new bronze bells.

A small bell hangs in the little tower of the old church. She survived the chaos of war. The age is unknown, it probably dates from around 1700.
