history

A monastery tradition leads the establishment of the place back to the Agilolfinger Duke Odilo and his wife Hiltrudis in the years 737 to 739. In 833 and 836 a ducal, later royal palace is attested. The Canon Monastery was founded by Duke Heinrich V and his wife Luitgart in the 11th century. The monastery came to the Premonstratensians in 1138 through Bishop Otto von Bamberg . In addition to the monastery, a large town soon grew up with several wealthy people who frequently appeared as witnesses from 1139 to 1198. Towards the end of the 12th century, this original Osterhofen was granted market rights, and in 1259 it is expressly called the market.

When Osterhofen was re-established as a town on the old trade route near the Danube in 1378 , the former market sank down to the village. It was initially called Altosterhofen or Osterhofen in the old market, until the end of the 16th century exclusively the name Altenmarkt prevailed. In 1783 the Pope ordered the dissolution of Osterhofen Monastery . The women's monastery established by the elector's widow Anna Sophia lasted until 1833. In 1858 the English ladies took over the monastery. In 1854 the village of Altenmarkt consisted of 84 residential buildings. The municipality of Altenmarkt, which belonged to the Vilshofen district , was incorporated into the city of Osterhofen on January 1, 1972 as part of the regional reform in Bavaria .
